Rental versions of TV shows

I recently rented the first disc of V the TV series and Without a
Trace. The DVD is one sided and says "Rental Only, Not for Resale" on
the one side. The netflix says "The DVD menu may indicate that this
disc is two sided, that is not the case. Subsequent episodes are on
separate discs." Since I haven't seen the versions that are available
for sale at stores, I was wondering if they are two sided disks. Were
these Rental only versions created just so that the company renting
them will have twice as many discs to rent? I rented two sided
versions of Northern Exposure from Netflix before. Both of these disc
are from WB, so I didn't know if that company alone was making special
rental discs

It's the same thing with the Netflix version of Warner's _The Waltons_.

According to Amazon, the first season of _The Waltons contains 5 disks,
but I had to rent 9 separate single-side Netflix disks to see the whole
season.

Maybe you're on to something here.

This may vary from title to title. I've rented the "Green Acres" DVDs from
Netflix and have gotten the two proper, double-sided discs.

I don't have the "V" set, but I did pick up the WITHOUT A
TRACE set, and they are definitely DVD-18s (dual-sided,
dual-layered).

Probably. Or so the shops can put stickers on them.

Could be. NE is from Universal, and someone else mentioned
renting dual-sided discs of GREEN ACRES, which is MGM.
