In the LD boxed set, it's explained that there were three soundtracks
made at the time: one for 70mm, one for 35mm, and a mono soundtrack.
Each was slightly different and elements of each were combined into
one for the video release.

Could be--Reportedly there were TWO theatrical re-releases of ANH, one
in '79 to sell the ESB trailer, and one in '81:

I don't recall seeing the '81 re-re-release *personally*, but recall at
some point the fan "'A New Hope'?--WTF's *THAT* supposed to mean??"
debate quite clearly.
I have some dim repressed memories of "What, a new crawl and they dumped
it in theaters *again*??", but you'll have to present some more solid
evidence before I can comfortably yield on this one.

Derek Janssen (darn, those memories *are* starting to come back)

And a third in 1982. Did you look at the starwars.com story at the link
provided above? And you still *doubt* Lucafilm? You do? Really? My
goodness.

This is total, absolute ****ing bullshit. That's always been there.
I saw it 20 times in '77, trust me on this.

I just love ****ing idiots who invent **** like this, without research
of any kind, to make themselves sound cool in a newsgroup. "Well,
gee, I don't remember Vader regaining control of his ship, so it must
not have been there. Durrrrr!!!!"

And 2004 George will be covered over with 1977 George, complete with
flannel shirt and '70s hair.

I know the special's in the DVD set, thanks, but for those of us who
aren't buying the set, this is a chance to see the special for free.

And some of us just don't care enough anymore to watch it even if it is
free. Or think its more enjoyable to make just fun of the whole thing in
order to cover our bitter disappointment with Lucas' public displays of
senility.
