Don't forget the Genesis sequence in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
(1982).....

I don't remember things that way. Where I lived, in Las Cruses,
New Mexico, I can't recall even hearing about Logan's Run
among my friends or in school (I was in 5th grade).

Even at a young age, I'd been impressed with 2001, and I know
for a fact that my father and "older folk" would've considered
that the Coolest Sci-Fi Movie Ever Made.

With us kids -- The Planet of the Apes was still discussed a lot,
especially since it hadn't been that long ago that the TV series
had been around. And speaking of TV, and sci-fi, I recall an
awful lot of kids being fans of the Six Million Dollar Man.

But Logan's Run -- I don't recall even paying attention to that
film until I saw it on network TV sometime in the early 80's.

And this is as good a time to mention:

Close Encounters was pretty huge in '77 as well. Stars Wars
had peaked the interest in sci-fi films, and I can remember there
was a lot of excitement before and after CE was released. And
for me personally, it's been those famous five notes in CE that
have echoed through my childhood instead of anything from
Star Wars.

Yes, I *love* Star Wars. Seen it 50 (zillion ) odd times. But
I still *prefer* movies with a more "solid" background in science.
I respect a 2001 or a Close Encounters more than I do Star Wars.
If I was stuck on that perverbial island with the choice ofonly
one film to watch the rest of my life, it would still be Alien. I'm not
knocking Star Wars, or denying it was a cultural super-phenomenon;
I just don't don't think it was the "end-all, be-all" sci-fi flick that some
people want to make it out as. It was great, no doubt, but there were
several great films made before it, and a couple of true classics released
just after.

I will definately credit Star Wars with one thing. If Star Wars hadn't
been a huge hit, I never would've gotten my favorite film (Alien), so
thank you Star Wars and George Lucas for opening up Hollywood
for future sci-fi blockbusters.

Have a great day!

Then when it did come out on video tape it was at the rental price of like $80
a copy. You had to hope to find and buy a used beat up tape that was a year
old after being rented 90 some odd times.

and freaking pan and scanned !!!!

You do realize that DVDs are just mastered, authored, pressed,
boxed, and shipped to retailers overnight do you?

The changes are real, I've seen em with my own eyes myself.

I don't mind comic relief but it got to be a bit on the overkill side
after a bit as far as I am concerned with Jar Jar Binks.

Its a shorter version as they do need to run ads. The DVD version will
be much longer, so its all good.
