(CP) - In a move that could cost the studio a small fortune, Paramount
is recalling all retail copies of its two-disc DVD release of Star
Trek: Generations (Collector's Edition) because the discs do not
contain a couple of trailers the box art promises. The set was to go
on sale Tuesday, but a Paramount spokesperson says the re-release -
with an added sticker advising the elements are missing - could take a
month or two.

Generations is the 1994 transition entry in the big-screen series, the
one where Capt. Kirk passes the torch to Capt. Picard and gets to fade
away in all of his inter-galactic glory. The creators of the seventh
instalment in the series had to bend some of the rules of time and
space to ensure William Shatner's Kirk ended up in the same plotline
as successor Picard, even though it is 78 years later. The plot
involves the crew of the Enterprise encountering a ribbon of energy
called the Nexus (the Deus Ex Machina that hurtles Kirk ahead in time
by eight decades). This temporal Nexus has the dangerous property of
making dreams come true and of rendering time meaningless, and also
the potential to be used as a secret weapon that could wipe out
millions. Naturally, this makes it coveted by the evil Klingons. And
by the way, who knew female Klingon warriors - as homely as they are -
had such impressive cleavage?

It's as good an entry in the series as any, even without its epic
generational implications. There's also that amusing sub-plot in which
Data has a special emotion chip implanted, giving him, at-long-last,
exposure to human feelings. Quelle disaster!

Even minus the trailers, the second disc has some fascinating
elements, including scene deconstruction, a look at the F/X, of
course, a tribute to Matt Jefferies, who created the original
Enterprise design, and even a peek into the Picard family album, which
Jean-Luc cherishes and waves around in several scenes in the feature.

Star Trek: The Original Series (Season One) (Paramount) - The owners
of the franchise are only too well aware of the needs of the Trekker
culture (which is why they are taking such a drastic step with the
Generations discs). Although all original episodes of the series have
already been released on DVD, last week they released the first of
three boxed sets of the three 1960s seasons, a move that will save
collectors a lot of shelf space. This first one is not only packaged
in a cool plastic casing, it has a separate feature disc that includes
the documentary Birth of a Legend. It tells how Desilu shot two pilots
for the series, one with Shatner and the legendary original, in
black-and-white, with Jeffrey Hunter. We also learn about Shatner's
life since his demise in Star Trek: Generations, including days spent
on the horse-breeding farm he shares with his new wife.

Soul Plane (MGM) - If the Wayans Bros. had made Airplane, this is
probably what it would look like - a machine-gun patter of sight gags
and bad jokes, most of them based on African American stereotypes that
only African Americans could get away with. After successfully suing a
careless airline that killed his dog, our hero is awarded $100 million
with which he sets up his own all-black airline (NWA Air). Naturally,
the jumbo plane, both inside and out, is decked out in bootylicious
decor, with microskirted hostesses (who serve Popeye's Chicken and
Colt 45 malt liquor) and even a strip bar and casino on the upper
deck.

It wasn't the Nexus that the Klingons wanted. It was the tri-lithium weapon
used to destroy the stars.

Ian.
