Can anyone advise me on this. There's a huge difference in price, criterion's
offering is already available and includes (I think) a Visconte biog but at around £30 is double the price of Bfi's version which is out at the end of September. Might there be a difference in quality or any other factor that could justify this price difference. feedback welcome Jim |

many thanks for this - that's a useful link for the future. On this particular
film though, there isn't yet an entry for the Bfi version which I hoped to compare. Jim,
Do you have a link to this new "BFI" version?? On Mon, 06 Sep 2004 18:29:40 +0200, Jim <he@.re> wrote: >many thanks for this - that's a useful link for the future. Hi Allan, the best I can do is from the amazon.uk site:-
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...902782-6870002 It's not out until the end of the month apparently (I guess that would explain why your comparison site doesn't yet have any info). I'm not expert in these matters, but I gather Criterion have a reputation for quality but I wonder if this is down to the packaging and extras rather than the quality of the actual transfers? Many thanks. I'm still trying to read between the lines on this. As I understand it, the Criterion package includes an extra dubbed american-english version (presumably with Burt Lancaster's own voice) though I would imagine that this is the same film with an alternative sound-track. Do you happen to know how BFI's track-record compares to Criterions as far as quality of transfer is concerned? Jim |

I don't know about the Bfi version but the Criterion includes 2 different
release versions of the film -- the complete unedited one and the original American release. AAbrams0264 |

Yes it seems that is the major difference. But since I'm only interested in Visconti's original subtitled italian version - both of which are supplied by BFI and Criterion, I wonder if there would be a signigicant difference between the two? Guess we will have to wait until it's released! Keep an eye on that
site, one hopes it gets updated with the new version.. Now a true fan of the film would have copies of all versions! At least that's what the companies would love.
