Default Favorite DVD - Documentary

Hi All -

A simple question - What's your favorite documentary DVD? Am looking for
anything interesting for my collection. How about three catagories - Science
and Nature, Music and History.

Starting off with Science and Nature, mine would probably be THE ELEGANT
UNIVERSE, part of the NOVA series from PBS which puts often confusing and
complicated scientific theories into laymans terms.

From a musical standpoint, RICHARD RODGERS - THE SWEETEST SOUNDS (one of the
American Masters series) stands out as probably my favorite, especially
considering how priceless and beloved his music has become over the years. I
dare say some of it even transcends generations

Finally, from an historical and adventurous standpoint, the outstanding Ken
Burns directed LEWIS AND CLARK - A JOURNEY OF THE CORPS OF DISCOVERY comes
to mind immediately.

Thanks in advance for your input -

Will in San Francisco

History: _The Atomic Cafe_.

Plot Summary for Atomic Cafe, The (1982)
A compilation of 1960's films about what to do in case of a Nuclear
attack and the effects of radiation, also footage of troop tests of the
exposure to an atomic bomb.

Summary written by Michael Edwards {}

Atomic Cafe is a review of the atomic age and the beliefs held by
Americans at the time. Many things such as Burt the Turtle who was the
figurehead the "Duck and Cover" campaign are featured. Along with these
film clips are portions of Army training films and demonstration films
concerning atomic testing. All of these clips are combined to show how
little the experts knew about atomics at the time. And even more to the
heart, the point is to show the extent propaganda was used to mollify
the fears of the American public, and her soldiers.

I just watched "Devil's Playground" last week, an Amish documentary. The
commentary track was like watching a whole 'nother documentary! Excellent.

Indeed it is.

I suggest: Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey as another very interesting
documentary.

Everyone remembers the Ken Burns mega-series (ie., longer than 4 hrs):
Civil War, Baseball, Jazz, and...what's that other one people always
leave off the list?--
Oh, yeah: http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?movieid=60035407

(On the "4 hrs. and under" side, there's still:
Thomas Jefferson, Lewis & Clark, Mark Twain, Empire of the Air, The
Congress, and Horatio's Drive)

Derek Janssen (so, those of you looking for the easy "Baseball" gags,
try one of the minis--You'll learn something)

IFC's "A Decade Under the Influence" about the films and filmmakers of the
1970's.

"One Day in September" horrifying doc about the Isreali athlete killings in
the 1972 Summer Olympics.
