Default is a digital filter necessary?

Hello! i am implementing a code to read the signal of an optical
decoder joint to a motor . I don't know if before the codification of
the position it is necessary to filter the signals from the encoder...
does somebody know it?
thanks in advance
bye

It depends on how "dirty" the signals are, so from your particular
environment/layout/shielding!
I would say: some simple filters won't hurt in any case...
