720P progressive: No, because it sounds too low compared to 1080i HDTV
(even though 720p is actually very good.) 1080P: No, because true progressive scan images are not filtered/softened, and so will appear to sharp and pixellated on an interlaced 1080i TV. 1080i: Yes. And will have all the drawbacks of interlacing. And de-interlacing will be just as problematic as it is with current DVDs. |

Kidding aside, the American HD standard (ATSC) allows for all sorts of resolutions, from 480i to 1080p (1080p was not originally supported in the ATSC standard but this has been changed, I looked it up). It also supports either 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratios. And if a tv show were released on HD-DVD (and keep in mind HD-DVD is the Toshiba spec that seems to be losing ground to Sony's Blu-Ray, so we'll probably be buying "Blu-Ray players" in three or four years, not "HD-DVD players"), then that show would be released in its original format, from 480i for the older shows, to the HD specifications of 720p or 1080i (many people say 720p and 1080i look the same, in spite of 720p's lower resolution, because it is interlaced, however 1080p, which no shows are filmed in but is nevertheless supported, looks the best of all). But I'm guessing your real question is, what resolution will I be watching movies in? That will be 1920 pixels across by 1080 pixels high. -- "The world cares very little about what a man or woman knows; it is what a man or woman is able to do that counts." --Booker T. Washington |
