Some that weren't mentioned, maybe some that were, that I think are
good/quality SF (none are particularly space related, except maybe the
last one peripherally):

Altered States
Equilibrium
Mad Max/The Road Warrior
Minority Report
Repo Man

Just to echo some of the others (fairly obvious choices really, if you
haven't seen them, then you should (and leaving out the really obvious
choices):

The Fifth Element
Galaxy Quest
2001: A Space Odyssey

Blade Runner
A Clockwork Orange
12 Monkeys

Well, never having seen Solaris or it's predecessor, and only being given
the remake's name, it was pretty easy to make a mistake. If you'd said it
ripped off Solyaris it'd have been clearer

I picked the list from looking at my shelves of DVDs, that's my excuse
and I'm sticking to it

One sci-fi film I have I had to get on laserdisc (because there's no DVD
release yet), Deep Red, not the Italian horror but the '94 one about
people being able to live forever because of nanobots that landed on
earth.

No, really?

You pretty much summed up all my faves there, but you might to check out the
remake of Battlestar Galactica, although it's technically a pilot for a tv
show, it is around 3 hours long and "feels" like a proper movie, with some
awesome space battles.

There's also Supernova, a space-based sci fi movie which a lot of people
slated but I really like it, watched the disc many times since I got it.

Hmmm,

This Island Earth
Invaders from Mars (original)
X The Unknown (though this is set on earth)
Invasion of the body snatchers (so is this) (original)
It Came from Outer Space

I think others have mentioned all my other good films.

By the way, does anyone know where I can get Invaders from Mars on DVD
(PAL format)? I did buy it off ebay, (not a pirate) but the picture
quality is terrible.
It's even worse than the DVD I made myself by coping a VHS tape
recorded from tv about 5 years ago!

Cheers!

Based on your list, I would recommend:

Escape From New York
The Thing (Carpenter remake)
Robocop
Starship Troopers
Total Recall
The Terminator
12 Monkeys
Blade Runner
Soldier

This bloody order

shelf 1: toons - Futurama, Family Guy, ReBoot, Toy Story etc.
shelf 2: 80s - classics, comedy, horror, sci-fi
shelf 3: others - favorites, comedy, horror, sci-fi, action, martial arts

Over 200 DVDs in all.
