Default play speed settings

I can change the play speed setting on my DVD to 0.8, 0.9, 1.0 (default),
1.2 and 1.4. The amazing thing is that there is no change in pitch of the
audio. The actors' movements look artificial in slower or faster speeds, but
the speech, singing and orchestra playing sound completely natural. How do
they do that? I suppose in faster speeds they can skip a few digital bits,
but how can the DVD make singers and orchestra stretch notes without
affecting pitch? Does it replicate every fifth-or-so digital bit? - Noam

If you'll notice you're not hearing the whole soundtrack being
compressed, rather pieces of it are snipped out in time with the
fast-forwarding. By the same token you won't see each frame when you
fast-forward, you'll only see chunks.

How about the 0.8 and 0.9 (slower) speeds? - Noam
