The version I was watching last night (Miramax DVD) seems to have the
whole movie (172 minutes) but it's disappointingly NOT anamorphic. I see presumably anamorphic version available (ID: 2029C702, UK and Korea). Has anyone seen this? It's a visually stunning film and would be greatly improved over the Miramax release if anamorphic. I have more than one movie marked anamorphic that isn't! Dan_Musicant |

Looka here: http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparison...e.php?fid=3770 It IS anamorphic, but I'm not sure it improves much on the Miramax version. I am sure I read somewhere that the Korean release is a bit off colour-wise. I looked at DVD-Beaver, but the comparison wasn't there. IIRC, it was an issue of red tinting. I'll see if I find some more info. I have a single-disc korean release that I think is the same as the 2-disc, just missing the CD. I haven't seen it yet, and I haven't seen the Miramax release, so I can't comment on the differences. Cheers, Hans Kristian Haans |

Found a review, it was a green tint, not red http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=3653 In that review there is a comparison of the 2 releases at the bottom. I'd stick with the non-anamorphic Miramax if I were you. Looks miles ahead of the Korean one. Cheers, Hans Kristian Haans |

According to one review I read, they used a now-rare Shanghai 3 process technicolor method and the colors (at least of the Miramax version) are stunning. I suppose they may one day release a worthy anamorphic version. I checked this out of my local library, but thought if I could buy an anamorphic version it might be worth it. I guess not. Thanks. Thanks. I'm quite sure the cheap bastards used the transfer they did for the laserdisc release. I don't reward such anti-consumer behavior by buying non-anamorphic DVDs. -- Forte International, P.O. Two answers come to mind: clueless or cheap. Still not corporate behavior that I want to reward with a purchase. -- Forte International, P.O. The DVD was released in 1999, back when studio support for anamorphic enhancement was still a lot spottier than it is today. > Still not corporate behavior that I want to > reward with a purchase. Unfortunately, that's not the way the studio will interpret your boycott of this DVD. They will instead see it as evidence that there isn't a market for Farewell My Concubine on DVD, and therefore very little demand for a remastered edition. It's a damned-if-you-do/damned-if-you-don't proposition. Joshua Zyber |

There's a name for the results of that kind of thinking... Natural Selection > It's a damned-if-you-do/damned-if-you-don't proposition. Two words: **** 'em. -- Forte International, P.O.
