I feel bad for Darabont. This is the SECOND time this has happened to
him by Lucas. Anyone remember that he was all set to write "Phantom
Menace", and Lucas decided to take that on by himself at the last
minute?

I kinda liked it, in an undemanding way.

Darabont talks about his Indy IV script

Monday, February 16, 2004 - Gilles V
Indiana Jones 4 screenplay writer Frank Darabont explained to Ain't
It Cool News why his script didn't get green lighted from George Lucas.

"The short and simple version of the Indiana Jones 4 situation
is that after more than a year of working closely with Steven Spielberg
developing the story, I had completed a screenplay that Steven loved and was
hoping to shoot in July of this year. However, George Lucas had issues with
the script and slammed on the brakes in order to rework the material
himself. There is talk of enlisting another writer. Given that George is the
producer, but even more so because of their long and close friendship,
Steven is deferring to George in this situation.

It is now up to them to try to find a common ground regarding
the film. I wish them luck and hope their efforts result in something
they're both excited about shooting. What, if anything, might remain of my
work at the end of the process is anybody's guess, assuming the film even
gets made at this point. As for me, I'm disappointed, but I'm putting the
experience behind me and moving on with my life and my own projects."

The future of the fourth Indiana Jones film currently looks dark
but let's not give up hope! The makers were looking forward to begin
production on Indiana Jones 4 somewhere in this summer. But it currently
looks like it will have to wait till somewhere in 2005.

Thanks to Ain't It Cool News and Frank Darabont for this
explanation!!

I would still prefer they just leave well enough alone. But if they
insisted on doing this, and actually made a fourth Indy movie, the only
reason I'd hold out any hope for its quality would be because of Spielberg's
involvement, not Lucas'. If Lucas is the main player in making this movie,
can anyone imagine it will be any good at all?

BTW - who are they going to get to play Indy? Because I sure as hell don't
want to see Harrison Ford try to reprise the role at his current age and
make a laughingstock out of the franchise.

I don't know who would play indy, but; really, could you imagine anyone else
but Ford. he could still do it, but they better not wait to much longer.
My view is that, if their not going to cast ford then they better forget it.
There are just some movies that you don't want to see a change in lead cast,
like Die hard or Terminator!

IMHO

Uhh. Arnold was 56 when he made Terminator 3 and he looked virtually the
same as he did in T2, which was made 10 years earlier. Makeup and lot's
of hours in the gym can do wonders.

I know - that's exactly my point. No one can play Indy except Ford, and I
just think he's too geriatric to be believeable. I suppose any potential
script could play on that (the way that Never Say Never Again played on
Bond's age), but the Indy I want to see is the tireless scrapper of the
first 3 movies.

Arnold is in tremendous physical shape, and looks far removed from his age.
I'm sure Ford isn't in bad shape, but he definitely looks his age, and
nothing like the younger Indy.

I think it's ridiculous to refer to the film as "canned" when it's only Frank
Darabont's script that has been passed on. Believe me, if Lucas, Spielberg and
Ford are all wanting to do this movie, a script problem isn't going to stop
them. They'll get someone to re-write Darabont's script or they'll have
another script written but they'll make the movie. It may result in a yearlong
delay but it won't stop it. Of course, other problems could stop this
production, but this isn't one of them. I always doubted the film would be
done and released by 2005 anyways. LucasFilm has Star Wars: Episode III coming
out in 2005 and that movie has already begun (finished?) filming. Not only is
Episode III way ahead of Indy IV in terms of production, I just don't see
LucasFilm opening two major movies in the same year. "American Graffiti" came
out in '73, the original "Star Wars" came out in '77, LucasFilm's "More
American Graffiti" came out in '79, followed by "Empire" in '80, "Raiders" in
'81, "Jedi" in '83, "Temple" in '84, "Crusade" in '89, "Radioland Murders" in
'94, "Episode I" in '99 and "Episode II" in 2002. In LucasFilm's entire
history, they only released two major movies in one yea twicer: "Labrynth" &
"Howard the Duck" in '86 and"Willow" & "Tucker" in '88. Given the performance
of those four films, I don't think they're going to repeat it again.

Uh. No, he didn't look much the same.
