Default Sony DRU-510A slow 4x burn

Has anyone else with a Sony DRU-510A experienced slower than normal burning
at 4x ? I am writing to Ritek G04 media and selecting 4x speed. I have
tried in both Nero and CopyToDVD and it takes over 30 mins to complete.

It says 4x while it's burning, and it does burn fine without any errors. It
just takes too long to do it. I also noticed that the drive is a lot louder
while it is writing the lead-in and then quiets down for the rest of the
session.

Can anyone shed any light on this ? I even tried running Sony DSS in the
background on Overdrive just to see. But, no help!

Mike

I haven't noticed this with my own DRU-510A, though the media I've used is
different--Memorex DVD-R, which I've had no issues with, in spite of many
complaints I've read from other users about Memorex media in general.

Do you have the most recent firmware for the drive? Version 1.0F was
recently released.

Check to see if UDMA is still enabled in the IDE controller properties. Win
XP has a bad habit of kicking the drive back to PIO mode after a specific
number of errors. The fix is to delete the controller in dvice manager, and
when Windows redetect on reboot, check the box that says "USE UDMA IF
AVAILABLE."

I have the external version of the DRU-510A connected via firewire.
So far I've only tried Memorex 4x media, both DVD-R and DVD+R. Using
either Roxio EZ CD Creator or RecordNowDX, it will burn a full DVD in
about 13 minutes.

I would suggest trying different media, or try using RecordNowDX which
came with the drive.

1.0F is the most recent firmware for the DRU-510A. It was just released in
early January, here's the URL at the Sony website:
