Default DVD sizes...

Original movie DVD's seems to be app. 7-8 gigs. A DVD record for home use is
app. 4.7 gigs.

What kind of DVD format/record is the original DVD's?

What's the difference between these two?

Cheers

Geir

Many, but not all, commercial DVDs are dual-layer and hold twice as much
data as single-layer recordable discs.

Go to www.dvdrhelp.com and read one or two of the guides on copying DVDs and
you'll see there are several solutions to this apparent problem. DVD Shrink
is one.

So, you seem to think that dual layer DVDs are a problem.....

commercial dvds are pressed and can hold up to 18gig(4.7gig per layer per
side). You burn in the dye layer on the dvds you make at home, and
currently the technology is single layer per side.

The format of the original is "pressed" and it is 2 layers, unlike the 4.7gb
disc which has 1 layer. Another name this "pressed" format is called is
DVD-ROM (technical bit setting on the disc). You'll often hear it refered
to as simply "original" "source" or "retail." Another word which fits is
"legal."

The 2 layer (dual layer) disc actually holds 9.4gb, its just studios usually
only use 7-8gb.

BTW, it is is a good thing to note that the 4.7 & 9.4gb refers to
1,000,000,000 bytes, not a true Gigabyte. A real Gigabyte has 1,073,741,824
bytes. As you can see, that causes some problems. You can actually only
have a 4.38GB folder to burn onto a DVD±R disc, so if you have a folder that
Windows tells you is 4.70GB, it won't fit by a longshot.
