Wireless Networking - Please help. I've tried everything.

Default Please help. I've tried everything.

I am at my wits end and don't know what else to do. Please help if you can.

This is a 3 PC home wireless LAN connected through a router to a Cable
modem.
Two of the PCs are XP Home SP2 and one is Windows 98SE. All three _still_
connect fine to each other through the wireless LAN and still can retrieve
files from each other. Suddenly, because of something I may have done one
of the XP PCs (while still able to connect to the wireless network and
retrieve files)
can no longer connect to the internet through the wireless LAN. It keeps
reverting to trying to connect through my old phone dialup connection.

1. The wlan is working fine because this problem XP PC can connect to the
other computers just fine.
2. I have not changed any of my internet account settings. I just looked at
them again and they all say to connect through the lan. No change there.
3. I can connect to the internet if I use my old dialup - which I had not
used for years.
4. My wlan access is WPA protected. I have rebooted all PCs several times
with no benefit. The wireless network icon on the problem laptop shows that
it is connected with a good signal. I even disconnected and reconnected
several times (with re-entering the WPA) with no improvement. The W98 PC
still connects to the internet through the LAN with no problems so I think
it must be a problem within the problem XP laptop itself. But I do not know
where to look for it. Problem with its Internet
sharing?
5. I've turned off the WPA protection with no difference in the ability of
the problem laptop to connect to the internet.
6. None of my browsers are set to be "off-line" on this PC.
7. I restored from a recent backups of my system with no change in the
situation.
8. The adapter on my laptop is a Linksys 2.4 PCcard.

Please help. Despite a lot of reading I remain hopelessly confused when it
comes to wireless lans and I need simple help.

Jeff,

I have a wireless system and have had a difficult time getting the computers
to work. I hade to do a full restore on my laptop in order for the computer
to recognize the WPA number. Then I started over my reset the wireless
capabilities on my laptop.

Thanks Sandy. Actually I am quite knowledgeable when it comes to computers
but networking has always been a nightmare for me. I already restored with
no help and tore my remaining hair out. I've been fighting with this for
days and just 1 hour after sending my message out, I changed a single
setting and all is well again. Finally!!

Perhaps you've set the internet on that XP machine to "always dial default connection".
Check the Internet connections settings again.
The correct setting is "never dial".

My Emachine laptop can be set to turn on the wi-fi at bootup from the BIOS.
Brand new the laptop required that I press the hot key combination to enable
wi-fi. Check your BIOS.

No, it turned out to have something to do with optaining DNS from the
router. Don't know why that setting suddenly decided to switch itself off!

I hate fooling around with networks. They're too confusing for me.

I had the same problem. PC would see the wireless network adapter, move
data on the network, but not connect to the internet. (No IP assigned,
etc.) Thinking back, problems started after a repair/reload.

Although everything appeared fine, windows did not fully recognize 3rd
party softward to control wireless card. (Netgear in my case, Linksys
in yours).

Try uninstalling the Linksys program (Cont panel/Add remover programs).
Reboot, let it "find new hardward", reinstall Linksys software and
drivers, select control connection thru the linksys software, and the
internet connection will probably work.

Regards. HH
