Wireless Networking - Is this ever going to work? |

Sorry folks, I've had a trawl though Google Groups etc to see if
anyone's already asked this but I don't seem to find exactly my situation. So: I have two desktop PCs with PCI wireless cards, both running XP Pro+SP2. Between the two is a D-Link DSL-G604T router. One of the desktops has a dialup ISDN internet connection. I do *not* have an ADSL connection (I will one day, hence this router, but for the moment I'm confined to ISDN for professional reasons and I can't afford both). I have Windows Firewall activated on the ISDN and the LAN, also NAV (but not their firewall). Everything works wonderfully well file-sharing and printer-sharing-wise, but I can't access the internet from the PC which doesn't have the connection. I used to be able to, when I had no router, just the two PCs set up as peer to peer. The router is there because I was having endless radio signal problems without it, which it seems to have solved. I assume that's just because it reduces the distances and the number of walls/floors involved since I can see no other logical reason! D-Link's help desk said I couldn't do it, but it was close to going home time for them when I rang them and the person I spoke to inspired very little confidence. Can any of you well informed people give me any help on this? TIA Dave -- Dave Spencer Dave Spencer |

I'm doubtful there's any way to get that working. You might be able to do
something with ICS if you turn off DHCP on the router, but your best bet would be a wireless router with ISDN capability like the one at http://www.netgear.com/products/details/FWG114P.php -- "Dave Spencer" <> wrote in message news:... > Sorry folks, I've had a trawl though Google Groups etc to see if anyone's > already asked this but I don't seem to find exactly my situation. I assume that before you had the router, you had the two PCs communicating in wireless ad-hoc mode, had one of the PCs connected to the ISDN line, and activated ICS on that PC. Because your router can't connect to your ISDN line, you still have to connect via the same PC, and you still have to share that connection using ICS on that PC. ICS essentially implements a router in software. Thus, your problem most likely is caused by having two active routers on the network. What you need to do is to turn the D-Link router into a switch (which is part of what it is anyway). Turn off the DHCP server in the D-Link. You also should not connect anything to the router's WAN port. And you will need to set the router's IP address to something other than 192.168.1.1 (which is what ICS sets for itself). Most recommendations I've seen say to set it to 192.168.1.2. http://tinyurl.com/cclwc describes how to connect two Linksys WRT54G wireless routers together, but, as I said, I don't see why it won't work with ICS as the "router" and your D-Link DSL-G604T as the "wireless 3-port switch." Of course, the details of how to set up the D-Link will differ from the Linksys, and you won't have to worry about conflicting SSIDs. The advice to write down all your settings should not be ignored. I hadn't realized that it's a combination DSL modem/wireless router. This makes things more complicated, but I still think you should be able to make it work. I suggest staying away from "wizards" of all flavors, and making the settings manually. If possible -- and I didn't spend a lot of time studying the manual -- it would be nice to be able to turn off the DSL/WAN interface, but it probably isn't necessary. FYI, not all ISPs will accept any random DSL modem. Hopefully, if/when you get DSL service, you will be able to use this piece of hardware. Lem |

I turned off DHCP but no improvement. Thanks for trying though. D -- Dave Spencer Dave Spencer |
