Default New to using DVD recorder

Can someone please tell me if I need to protect the recordings I make
on my RW DVD, so that I don't record over them.

There is a menu that gives this option, but I am not sure whether this
refers to the disk itself or the individual recorded items on the
disk.

Thank you people - sometimes appliance manuals do not explain
everything one needs to know!

If you can keep your head when those around you
are losing theirs, you probably haven't understood
the situation.
