Default DVD-Rom and Sound

Hello,

Perhaps someone could help me, at the moment I have my PC hooked up to my TV
set via my video cards TV-Out (Radeon 9800 Pro), and sound via my on board
AD1985 SoundMAX 6CH (AC'97).

Now I rekon that this is not the way DVD's were meant to be heard. So I'd
like to upgrade my sound and hopefully someone here could help me.

Is it better that I invest in something like an Audigy Sound Card, and hook
that up to speakers. Or better if I get a dedicated external amp, the kind
that comes with the Sony DAC speaker systems?

Also would I get better DVD playback from a dedicated player or is through
my DVD-Rom and TV-out fine (Samsung 16x DVD).
