Review: My first DVD 9 Disc - The Core

Finally, I have the misfortune of buying a DVD 9 disc on ebay (the one with
"the cover may be different from the picture" written in the smallest font
possible). I've initiated a charge back through paypal so I'll get my money
back. But since the seal has already been broken so I just watched the disc
nonetheless.

First of all, I don't know how there could be a DTS track for this movie
becasue there is none. My guess is it's just the same old DD track
recompressed by the pirates to DTS.

The picture is heavily pixalated, barely better than SVCD. All picture
details are lost, espcially the black and grey details which this movie is
full of. There is a little rectangle on the upper right hand corner with a
P in it which I guess is just the pirate's watermark.

Interesting is that the seller gets almost 100% on feedback so either people
are happy buying bootlegs or they don't know they are buying bootlegs. The
later will be my guess. I got the disc for $9 plus shipping which is cheap
but not really that cheap and the seller is from Canada. Needless to say, I
would much rather pay a buck or two more to get the real deal.

The movie itself sucks big time, if you ask me. But the most interesting
fact is a quote I found at the back of the case:

"In the end, the script is probably the only ture thing that I felt was
lacking."

Wow, kind of embarassing to get your tech facts wrong in your thread title!

The store bought, 100% legal copy of the Core is DVD9 along with 95% of
every DVD released today.

I'm guessing you mean DVDR or DVD5 blanks?

DVD-9 on the front of the disc is a dead giveaway that it is a pirated disc.
Mine is a pirated disc alright. The legit one won't have a DTS track and
Malay subtitles on.

Not always. A lot of legit Hong Kong DVDs have DVD-5/9 plastered all
over them. Usually on the back, though.

My apologies. I was talking in tech terms of course. I guess they have
dual layer plants over there.

A Malay disc with Malay subtitles? Could they BE any more obvious? Not
everything from Malaysia is illegal, you know...

Something like this:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...category=41521

But the disc has a red DTS banner on the cover, unlike the picture shown on
the ad.

Yes and I've bought some authentic Malay and Thai pc games from ebay. But
in this case:

1. The Core has no DTS track which this disc has
2. The Core is a R1 new release and the R3 release is not out yet
3. Even if the R3 release is out, it'll not play on a R1 player if the disc
is genuine

Gee, no wonder all the pirate DVD sellers got close to perfect feedback
record, most people couldn't tell a fake one from a real one.
