I got an early copy of the new 2 disc SE. I must say the transfer, in
its lovely and proper ratio of 2.20 (the film was shot in Super
Panavision 70mm), is basically terrific - excellent color, too, thank
goodness. There is a pan and scan version on Side Two of disc one, but
I'm afraid for those who still insist on watching films in this ignorant
way that the pan and scan is not taken from this new transfer - it's
from the old transfer, hence not sharp, ugly, and brown. Oh, well.

Disc Two has lots of extras but I was very disappointed in the
"documentary". It's basically twenty-five minutes of Dick Van Dyke
reminiscing (not always accurately) intersperced with clips which take
up about fifteen of the twenty-five minutes. It would have been
wonderful to have the kids in it and the Sherman Brothers, too, but no,
apparently that would have been too much for a Special Edition.
Interestingly, there was a recent UK TV show in which the kids appeared
- they should have just licensed that. There's a promo for the stage
version, several at the time of featurettes, and the SB demo recordings
of the score.

But it's the transfer that's the star and THAT they got right.

Thank goodness. I can't wait to see it. It is one of my favourite movies.
