Are you suggesting that this dust is in focus? or just slightly lowering
the image contrast?
I've seen websites describing surgery (removal of IR filter) on the 990, 995
series but it's not for the faint hearted.

To get the dust from under the front element, you'd have to remove
it. I DON'T recommend this. It should only be done by an accredited
Nikon service center. If you try it, you could wind up with major
headaches trying to get things reassembled.

A bit of dust under the lens really isn't that much of a problem.
The dust should be so far out of focus that it won't show up
in your images.

If it doesn't degrade your images.. Just leave it. Dust in lenses is
pretty common.

I had the exact same problem with mine and called the factory.

Dissolve two teaspoons of salt in a gallon of warm water, remove the
batteries and card from the camera then submerge it for about 30 minutes-
shaking it every 5 minutes or so.

Remove, soak/rinse thoroughly in cool clear water, then put it in the oven
at a low temperature- about 175 degrees is about right- for an hour to dry
and all the dust spots will be gone.

It was Martins camera. NOT yours!

isn't it better going for a refund or a new camera?

Just ran across this thread, a couple of weeks late. It surprised me
that no one observed that salt water is one of the most damaging
solutions to many objects. Why would anyone want to dip their
expensive camera in the ocean for example? Even soaking and rinsing
in clean water is certainly no guarantee of preventing corrosion and
other damage.

I own a Coolpix 950 and two 995's, and you'll never con me into
dipping them in salt water! Regardless of dust particles!

I find salt water dumping to very questionable.

Water does not conduct, but salt water does conduct.

The salt will crystallize on circuits inside the unit and probably cause
problems later in a humid environment, by conducting and sorting the
circuits.

Maybe they meant the lens only, but someone must be pulling someone's leg.
