The focal length conversion factor for your camera is 1.6 . Your 85mm
becomes a 136mm lens. The very inexpensive 50mm f1.8 would be a better
choice (80mm on the 300D).

But the kit lens is a wide-tele zoom. I'm sure the prime would be a great
lens, but it would not be the only lens you'd want.

It doesn't magically 'become' a 135mm lens. See the discussion in the
'300d?' thread.
