Default Missing machines within workgroup

System: desktop running W98SE with all current service packs and
connected to LINKSYS router [WRT54g v21.2]. Laptop running XP
Professional with SP2 and all current updates installed.

Problem: XP machine is able to 'see' and communicate with the
desktop via the wireless link but the laptop does not appear in the
desktop's Network Neighborhood so I am unable tocommunicate in
the reverse direction.

I've experimented with permissions and firewall settings for a few
days now but with no success...

Advice/assistance appreciated...I'm new to WinXP but have some
light experience with small peer-to-peer hookups using Win98SE.

Try:

1. On the laptop, if the SP2 firewall is enabled, make sure there is an
exception for File and Printer sharing. If you are running 3rd party
security software, make sure it is properly configured or uninstall it.

2. Possibly what you are experiencing is Win9x's notorious refusal to
accept defeat in browser elections. On the laptop go to Administrative
tools/Services - change the setting for the Computer Browser Service from
Automatic to Manual - reboot and wait; it can take awhile to build a server
list even on a two machine network.

Try:

1. Check that both machines are members of the same workgroup.

2. On the Win98 machine open a command prompt and run:

net stop browser
net start browser
wait..........try Network Neighborhood.

3. Make sure file sharing is working: on the Win98 machine click Start/Run
\\IPaddressofLaptop ENTER.

Doug...

Both machines are in the same workgroup

"net stop browser" produces an error message:
Error 2185: The service name is invalid. Make sure
you are specifying a valid service name, and then
try again.

Also tried "net stop IE 6"
same error message.

"\\IPaddressofLaptop" produces
Bad command or file name.

"\\IPaddressof[laptop ID on network]" produces
Network name cannot be found

On the Win98 machine:

Control Panel/Network - highlight File and Printer Sharing and click
Properties. Set Browse Master to Auto (I think - select whatever choice
enables this). Make sure Computer browser is still set to manual on the
laptop, and reboot both machines.

When you run \\IPaddressof laptop, are you using the laptop's correct
address? -eg. something like \\169.254.18.12. You can check it by running
ipconfig on the laptop. If this does not work, file and printer sharing is
not functioning on the laptop.
