Hi, I'm wondering why my 10D embeds small jpegs in the RAW files? Is this
necessary? Does it effect image file size of the RAW images? Thanks, mj

Kibo informs me that "Mike Jenkins" <> stated that:

That's the review image, & is also used for quick previews when you
download the files to your PC.

If you want to be able to review your shots, yes.

Yes it does, but the smallest embedded JPEGs are pretty tiny compared to
the RAW files itself. You can change the embedded JPEG size from the
Custom Functions menu.

With RAW, the 10D gives you the option of embedding six different sizes
and qualities of JPEG within the RAW files. These range from Large SupeFine
to Small Fine. This option is set in Custom function 8 (C.Fn-0

The larger and finer the JPEG, the larger the resulting RAW+JPEG file size and
the fewer you get on a flash card.

If you have no plans to do anything with the embedded JPEG, set it to small fine.
(That's how I set mine).

Whether the embedded JPEG is necessary or not is a moot point since there
is no option to turn the feature off.

The JPEG is, I believe, used on the display on the camera
screen. This keeps the camera from having to process the
image each time it is viewed.

Bayer DSLRs, like the 10D, cannot playback RAW images in-camera, so
they have to include a tiny JPEG thumbnail. Viewing images in the
field isn't really much better than shooting film, since details/focus
cannot be accessed when shooting RAW with Bayers DSLRs.

The only DSLRs capable of playing back a RAW image on the camera LCD
in full RAW format detail are the 2 Sigmas. Ironically, Sigma embeds
a tiny JPEG thumbnail too, but its only used for SPP's desktop window
browser. The cameras go to 400% magnification in less than 0.1 secs
during camera playback.

None of what you say is in any remote way in the least bit relevant to what
the OP asked.
(Have you read about your idiotic self at dpreview Georgina?)

Nonsense. Where do you think the thumbnails come from? They are generated
from the Raw data and that can be done quickly because of a built-in digital
image coder chip!
The reason for creating an in-camera JPEG, is for efficiency reasons, both
for in-camera review and outside the camera to allow file browser preview
without the need for a Raw converter.

(Whoops group, sorry about the blank reply just then)

What do you mean, only Sigmas are capable of doing it? They bloody well
HAVE to, because the boys down at the Sigma sweat shop weren't clever enough
to manage to put a JPEG engine in their POS cameras!!
