Canon 10d and Err 99

Hi all,

I'm a proud owner of a Canon 10d and in the last few month I've took
something like 20.000 images without any kind of problem.
In the last few days I'm encountering an Err 99 problem.
For me switching to OFF and ON is enough every time.
Frequency of this error is something between 30 and 100 shots in
continuos mode, it's nothing really debilitating, but it's driving me nuts.

I've used many lenses, one for all: a Canon 50mm 1.8, but also Sigmas.
I've replaced my CF card (1 GB IBM Microdrive, a standard CF) and I
was able to reproduce this problem with every configuration possible, at
any resolution. If matters Firmware is 2.0.1

Is someone experiencing the same problem ?
On groups I've read about people having sistematic problems with older
lenses, and generally their resolution is to remove batteries or replace
lenses. Contacts between lenses and body seem to be clean.
Since the Err 99 is the generic [unknown] error on 10d I think I'm
having a different problem...

I bought my camera in Canada, but for personal problems I got back in
Europe, where warranty is different and mine (I was told) is null.
Before crossing the ocean to get it repaired,
I'd love to know a diagnosis if possible, if not a solution

thank you in advance

Dave

Error 99 is the catch-all for "it doesn't know exactly what happened." Quite
commonly, it is caused by an unexpected communications protocol glitch between
the body and the lens, or more typically, between the lens and the body. Some
of the oldest non-Canon lenses will cause Err 99 all of the time. It is
possible for a Canon lens to cause it, but that is quite rare. It could be from
the physical lack of integrity in the contacts between the lens and the body.
That could be from mechanical failure of the lens mount, dirt or moisture on
the electrical contacts, or anything of that sort. It could be on the lens
side, or it could be on the body side. There are other completely different
things that can cause Err 99, but these are the most likely.

So, now you need to isolate the problem.

I would bet that it is a problem with lens
communication. Most likey from using older lenses.

That was a big advantage the D6o has over the 10D.
The 10D only likes modern lenses and firmware/software
otherwise you get err 99 (lens communication error)

In article <u8src.13400$>,
says...

Sigma's DSLRs don't generate errors.

....take good photos.

Yes, we know, George. That's how we know you lied about selling any SD9
photos.

The fact isd Canon DSLRs generate more err codes than pictures, and
Sigma DSLRs never, ever do. Deal.

I don't think it matters if he does or doesn't.

I didn't notice a pre-requisite for forum participation

He certainly seems to have a very good view though and expertise which I for
one really am pleased to see in the forum

Imagine how scarce print shops would be if there was a pre-requisite that
employees should own a camera and have non-controversial view

thank you for your answer...
I've just reproduced the problem WITHOUT a lens mounted.

The last thing I can try is change the battery, but I've just one
battery... but I suppose that my camera is going to have a trip to
canon support... sadly
