Hi all,
I have the following needs and am having trouble finding a solution: 1) I have a 60GB (and growing) archive of images on a hard drive (I have them archived to CD and DVD as well, which is beside the point) 2) I want to be able to browse those images over the network, particularly from the laptop (801.11G).with comfortable speed. 3) I only desire screen sized/resolution images for fast browsing. I'll take the speed hit if I decide to edit an image. 3) I don't particularly need strong database support, though that would be a plus. 4) Needs to support JPEG as well as NEF (Nikon's RAW format) images. Suggestions? ---- "Guitarists can read music and know theory TO A FAULT. One approach would be to run a web server on your host and have your pictures in a web page, where the thumbnails come up, and if you click on a link it will give you the full size image. I keep ALL of my photos in web format, and I have albums that are either topic based or month based (ie, my daughter and now wife are actors at the Maine ren. faire, so I have an album devoted to just the faire, no matter whether I took the pictures in July or August, while more general pictures get uploaded to the months picture album). Each album shows a thumbnail for each picture, with links for the small (800x600), large (full size after editing), and original pictures. I have seen software in the past for Linux that would allow downloads and uploads as well, but at the moment, I use my own hand crafted perl scripts, and haven't gotten that far. In terms of the laptop, I keep the small and thumbnail versions of all of my pictures, but only keep that last year or so full size pictures, and only the last month's original pictures, and I use rsync/ssh to keep the main system and laptop up to date (both systems are Linux based). Basically at the start of a session, I do a rsync on the laptop getting any changed files on the master system, and after editing, I rsync the files back to the master, which updates any changed files. -- Michael Meissner email: http://www.the-meissners.org Michael Meissner |
