What I am asking is can a standard non-dedicated flash unit such as a
Vivitar 283 be used with a digital camera that has a hot shoe such as the Canon G5. Or do you have to use a Canon dedicated TTL flash unit? Or do you have to use a Canon dedicated TTL flash unit? Shoot with the camera in manual. No problem. Make sure the trigger voltage on the flash is 6v or under. Higher than that would be with a very old 283. A word to the wise. Have fun, Dan Sullivan Dan Sullivan |

Yes it can easily. But you have to consider making a
couple purchases ... a cheap handle bracket with a dead shoe, and a hot shoe slave unit. the 283 should have it's own settings so it will work. http://www.steves-digicams.com/digi_...ies.html#flash and you can find cheap slaves at ebay. The slave senses the camera's flashe and fires the 283 in the same instant. If you don't want the G5 flash to be a part of the image, use a piece of *black* exposed slide film (only) taped over it's flash, it acts as a filter that allows only infra-red light through it. This can also fire an array of slave flashes all around you. http://www.digitalsecrets.net/secrets/flash.html -- Sincerely, Alex ------------------------------ e-mail address not given, reply here. ------------------------------ "DG" <> wrote in message news:6rlRb.30237$U%5.204124@attbi_s03... > What I am asking is can a standard non-dedicated flash unit such as a > Vivitar 283 be used with a digital camera that has a hot shoe such as the > Canon G5. It has an independent auto mode, which will be triggered by the camera when mounted on the hot shoe. The internal flash is disabled when a flash is mounted. Obviously, since the camera does have a hot shoe a handle bracket is not necessary. Mark Mark B. |

If the pin voltage isn't too high, it will probably flash when you take pictures, but it will flash a full power. Most of your near to close-up shots will be overexposed. You should be able to get good results putting the camera in manual mode and calculating the correct exposure using a guide number chart. All you'll have to do is set the correct aperture and shutter speed. But you can't beat the versatility of a good E-TTL flash. Jim Townsend |

Not if the flash is on an AUTO setting > Most of your > near to close-up shots will be overexposed. Wrong. Set the ISO on the flash, set the flash to an appropriate AUTO setting, set the proper f stop on the camera (which is in manual mode) with an appropriate shutter speed.... and SHOOT! > You should be able to get good results putting the camera in > manual mode and calculating the correct exposure using a guide > number chart. The proper exposure can be made with a 283 or an E-TTL flash costing hundreds more. Have fun, Dan Sullivan Dan Sullivan |
