Even more logical would have been a K-mount body. If the SD-9 had been
K-mount they would have pre-empted Pentax by several months and cashed
in on that very large market, especially if it had properly handled
the M lenses.

Without the SA mount, the 10.3MP SD9 would retail upwards of $4500.

Eh? Has Sigma released a 10.3MP camera?

Apparently so.

Let me guess and speculate. Foveon needed to get a deal with an SLR
manufacturer as a "technology testbed" to get the X3 chip to the mass market
and validate its viability. Sigma saw a win-win opportunity (probably
sometime around year 1999) to grow market share for its SA mount and sell
more Sigma lenses to the emerging hot digital market. But Foveon's main goal
was not to boost Sigma, it was to eventually sell the chip to the big league
manufacturers, and therefore probably only allowed Sigma to use the chip in
their SA mount camera. If Foveon had allowed Sigma to make a KAF-mount
camera (for example) with the X3 chip, it would have made Pentax really mad,
and it would have been much harder for Foveon to get a sweet deal directly
with Pentax.
As it turned out, the market did not yet embrace the X3 chip, and Sigma
probably has recently sold few KAF mount lenses compared to their sales of
Canon EF-mount lenses. Now that the Pentax *ist D is out, Sigma's KAF-mount
lens sales probably are picking up. For prestige reasons, none of the big
league manufacturers are now likely to changeover to the X3 unless it
improves significantly (Minolta still being a wild card). Therefore, expect
Foveon's next step to be a camera for the P&S market.
Just my $0.02

Of course Canon has the wealth of engineering resources devoted to
consumer electronics, such as printers and LCD monitors. Additionally,
one of Canon's big engineering resources might be in their design
and manufacture of photolithography equipment used in the production
of integrated circuits.

Nikon is also a big maker of IC photolithography equipment. They
haven't quite branched out into the consumer electronics market like
Canon has however. I'd guess that would be a reason why they're
ahead of Minolta.

As an engineer, that's how we tend start a lot of our project off.

Have a click: www.sigma-photo.com

They call it 10.2MP, even though it is 10.29MP. The reason: they are
willing to take the 0.1MP reduction in order for the single decimal place
math to add up, i.e. "10.2MP (3.4MP R + 3.4MP G + 3.4MP B)"

Compare to...

Fuji S2 Pro "6.0MP (1.5MP R + 3.0MP G + 1.5MP B)"

That's higher than retail these days. Cameta will sell you a US warranty
SD9 in the high $600s if you are willing to bundle a lens or two.

That loud 'whooshing' noise you just heard was the sound of my sarcasm
flying thousands of feet above your head.

They announced a smaller chip for a P&S back in the spring, but it
hasn't materialized. There's a page on it in DPReview.com.
