When I pressed the "trigger" button on mine in low light condition,
the red LED (which flashes when counting down on self timer) went on,
and clearly lit the objects I was aiming at within 20 inches.
If this is not AF assist, I do not know what it is.
Not sure if I had disabled the external quick AF at that time.
(there is both a lens independent AF, and a traditional slower AF).
My camera was bought in Europe, might have different firmware.
But that light was not enough for it to focus anyway, which sucks.
It also fails in daylight.
