Hello,

I have a 5.0 megapixel camera and when I print my photos out at size 6"x4"
and above they turn out pretty good, however when I try and print small
images to get say, 8 shots on an A4 size paper they all come out bitty and
out of focus, I would have thought that the smaller the image on a 5.0
megapixel setting they would be excellent quality or am I wrong? Should I
choose a lower resolution for printing smaller Photo's? Any advice would be
greatly appreciated please.

Thanks.

RM: There is a lot to learn about all this stuff but it's all
interesting. It is however a bit hard to give absolutely clear and
accurate advice without going into great detail.

Let's start with this: There is no reason at all why you cannot get
great pics at small sizes if you have great pics on your monitor.

You must understand though, that whenever we make small pics we are
using less pixels in each inch across the image.
This means that a large pic might have 200 pixels across someone's
face in a large pic, but only 50 in a small pic. This obviously causes
a loss of sharpness or quality.

To partly answer your question - no, you don't need less pixels on
small pics, but preferably *more* pixels.
I'm not sure what the maximum is for desktop colour printers, but I
suggest that you do some tests with 600 ppi and see how much sharper
your images are.

There's a lot more to be said, but try that first.

Ray

Hi Susan,

What do you use to print your pictures?
Software, printer, etc.
