Default Standard ISO Hot shoe: PART2

I have a Canon EOS5 camera with the Canon Speedlight 380EX flash unit.
I am advised by my camera shop that the flash is not compatible with
my Nikon 5700 and that it could damage the Nikon... Can anyone confirm
this? Or is my local camera emporium hoping to entice me into buying
another flash unit at a couple of hundred??!!!!

Help please...Tnx

There are commercial safe-sync adapters, that isolate the camera from the
high voltage of the old strobes.

Go to http://www.adorama.com and search for "safe-sync". You will find four
different versions of the Wein Safe-Sync adapters.

B&H has them also. http://www.bhphotovideo.com search for "safe-sync".

I have a diagram of a DIY unit on my site.

Nikon and Canon use completely different signalling contacts - only the
main center contact is standard. At best, the Canon 380EX will always
fire full-power on your Nikon camera. At worst, you might damage the
electronics on either or both the camera and flash.

Your reply is just the job. Thanks. Loads of juicy info. The opto
isolator is the business for me.

I have not yet found the 'pinout' or layout designations of the ISO
hotshoe contacts. Can you help?

Once again, many thanks for you help.

Dave, Thanks for confirming what I already suspected. I shall not be
using it with the 5700.

The standard hot shoe contacts are:
The center contact is usually the normal full power, no TTL control contact
with the metal mount being the ground or common. You may have to experiment
with the polarity. If you have the wrong polarity, the strobe will not fire.
