I have just ordered my first digital camera. I have noticed that some
software,like Photo Impact 8 etc., allows you to enter the focal length for
the camera. What is this going to do? If it does anything can I assume
that the value might be meaningless if the camera has a zoom lens?

I don't use Photo Impact, so I can't speak for it, but software I use wants
to know the effective 35mm focal length so the software can determine the
field of view for stitching the photos together.

Well, you are expected to know the focal length you _used_, not the range
of the zoom.
