Default Photoshop-Saving History with Image

Is it possible to save the history of an edit on an image? So that when it
is opened the next time, the history of actions will be available?

This has come up before and as I recall, no, it's not possible. I use
Photoshop all the time so I'd be fascinated if that were false.

When I modify images, I use layers a lot, especially adjustment layers, and
the original image is always there as the background and always unmodified
(except for cropping). I keep the changes as independent as I can, using
multiple layers.

I will be using "actions" mostly to modify my images in batch. I guess that
I could save the action and the original tiff.
This way, I could modify the original using the "action" again with
modifications.
Thanks,
Lee

Nope, once closed all History information is gone. History states exist
only in RAM or in the temporary scratch file, not ROM. If you need to save
work-in-progress, do a file "save as", or "save as copy."

You cannot save the history as such but you could save the file to a new
name after each major change. To some extent you can record Actions that
allow you to reproduce the same effects etc, later.

Cropping... youll love this.
before you crop, double click the background layer in the layer pallett.
this turns it into a layer rather than a background.
when you drag a crop box over your image look in the toolbar along the top
where it says "Cropped area" click hide instead of delete.
it will keep all your image available so you could nudge or move it around.
hard to explain but try it and see. only issue is that the file needs to be
saved as a psd or layered tiff to preserve your uncropped image area after
saving/closing. can come in very handy.
