Has anyone else in this newsgroup been getting Spam from Microsoft with
Virus attached?

Last night I received 82 Emails and when I got off from work I had another
192 From Microsoft all with a Virus attached What a pain.

Sorry for the out of topic subject .

Just seem to be getting more Spam since I have been reading and posting in
newsgroups.

Sorry for Venting!

Gary

They aren't from MS. It is the latest mail worm exploit - much more clever
than the last one.

It's basically a DoS attack, smearing the MS name in the process. (and
well it should) I haven't figured out how to cleanly defeat it by
rule. Life could suck for a few weeks. You might try deleting all incoming
over 100k, but you may lose good mail in the process.

Same thing for me. Not sure there is any relation with newsgroups. Really
getting tired of that stuff.

Microsoft *never* sends out patches. It's not from MS, it's a virus.

I used to have sympathy for the computer hacker!

Not any more!

They should have their computers taken away locked in a small room and
forced to watch all of the "I love Lucy, Lassie, Leave it to Beaver & Brady
Bunch, episodes" before they are let out!

I've got a four-step process that is
handling this attack quite nicely:

[1] My firewall, Zone Alarm Pro, disables the virus executable
by changing the file's suffix.

[2] POPFile, my bayesian spam filter, has been trained
to recognize virus emails. It marks the [defanged] virus
email by adding [virus] to the Subject line. Accuracy
running > 99%.

[3] Norton Anti-Virus deletes the virus executable, leaving in its
place a .txt note Re: the deletion

[4] An Outlook Express rule keys off the [virus] marker that
POPFile places in the Subject line, placing such email
in its own special folder, ready for cursory inspection and
deletion.

It's not (technically) spam and it's not from Microsoft*. It's the
latest virus going around. It forges the "From" line in the email header
to make it look as if it's from Microsoft in order to trick people into
running the attached file. If you run the attached file your machine (if
it's a Windows box) becomes infected and starts sending out more of
these messages. See http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/swen.shtml

* BTW: Actually *some* of these messages *are* from Microsoft. Seems a
few goobers at Microsoft received one of these messages and were dumb
enough to run the attachment and get themselves infected. Apparently,
people at Microsoft really are as stupid as people say...

Count yourself as fortunate. Today, since 9AM I have received over 700
of these. Different senders, different subject lines and all to a MAC
user.
