A square battery that could fit in any AA holder would have to be smaller.
See for yourself. Draw a circle. Draw a square inside that circle, corners
touching the circle. The square has less area.

On the other hand, draw a circle, representing a "conventional" AA
battery, and then draw a square OUTSIDE the circle.

I believe that the poster is expecting that existing battery
compartments would be able to accomodate the corners of the larger
battery in space that's now unused. The batteries would still fit
side-by-side as they do now.

Unfortunately, many battery powered devices have cylindrical battery
compartments where you drop the batteries in from the end, so they
couldn't use this proposed new design.

Just imagine how many more pictures you could take with 4 "D" cells
instead of 4 puny "AA" cells .

Then you have a battery incompatible with many AA systems.

This is what I meant when I said "that could fit in any AA holder".

Has anyone thought about why some manufacturers don't accept the AA-std ?
What do the alternative battery-packs look like? How many of them are round?

Most cameras that use AA-acc's store air inside that you carry about.

.....it's not the only factor, yes, yes....

But new devices could support the new form-factor(square) , and maintain
compatibility with the "old" round ones...
However some devices would have to be larger in sice to support this format,
and I'm quite happy with the current situation.
