I recently purchased an Olympus D560 Zoom camera which comes with the
Olympus Camedia Master Software Version 4.10. In the EDIT portion of the
Software you can alter the photos in several ways including RESIZING the
photos.
I can understand that you can resize a photo down (Eg. 2048x1536 can be
resized down to 1024x768 for example) but what happens when you resize a
photo upwards such as starting with a 1024x768 photo and resizing it to a
2048x1536 photo? The Software allows you do to it and displays the new size
after completion but does this actually work??
How do you start with a certain # of pixels and make more of them??

I am new to digital and would appreciate any comments.

Thanks

Bill

Anytime that you resize up you lose image quality. However you can
sometimes get pretty good results by first increasing the resolution to
maybe 700 ppi, for example, and then enlarging.

The software examines every pixel and the pixels surrounding it. Then it
figures out what color pixel should be ADDED to the mix to blend best with the
existing pixel and its neighbors. In the case you cited the software will
"invent" one pixel for every existing pixel. The process is called
interpolation. The information it adds is guessed at but the guess is a pretty
good one. You don't get any more resolution from your image but it should look
smoother and less pixelated than if you had not resized it.
