Shame on B&H

<Less than a week ago I purchased a camera from B&H. The camera is
defective(it loses power intermittently), so I call up B&H to exchange the
camera and they said that I could NOT exchange or receive a refund simply
because I filled out the warranty card for the camera.>

I am sorry about this. The return policy restrictions are clearly printed on
the back of our invoice and have been for years. This is not new. Basically
when a customer completes the warranty card or cuts the UPC code out to get the
rebate, the customer has handcuffed us as far as returns/exchanges go. In
general I regrest it when a customer handcuffs us.

However, in this singular instance I have good news. Your RMA # is coming via
e-mail.

I agree in this case. This was a joke.

You are right, very hypocritical and contradictive of me, isn't it? That's because
this was a joke. Perhaps the fact that it was so hypocritical and unlike my usual
comments would have given a clue as it being a joke.

<I've had to send my
Olympus camera back for factory service and the first thing they required
was a dated sales receipt to prove the camera was still under warranty; I
assume most, if not all, manufacturers have the same requirement. >

As a matter of fact the warranty card gets you nothing but a spot on the
manufacturer's mailing list. The dated receipt/invoice is your warranty
protection.

< In my opinion, B&H could have
taken care of this issue for you..>

Did it.

Some manufacturers have a 1-year warranty that comes with the camera/lens.
By sending in the registration card within a certain amount of time (30-90
days, depending - some larger purchases require sales receipt with mailed in
warranty card) can increase the warranty for several more years. Nikon has
that with some of their products. Not sending in the warranty card means you
are limiting yourself to one year.

I always check out a product when I first purchase it. If it meets up to my
satisfaction, then I send in any warranty cards and rebates. At that point
and time, I know I am going to be dealing with the manufacturer instead of
the retail outlet. After all, I've told the company that this is MY product
(by sending in the registration card).

You know what? I had this happen to me. My three week old D100
developed a hot pixel (green!). I had registered on-line because
everything was fine and even tossed the box.

I was screwed. I couldn't take it back to my local camera store and had
to wait three weeks (during the Christmas holiday's no less) to get it
back from Nikon Repair.

It sucked, sure. But it was my fault.

Uhh... that's illegal.

But I've done it before! A person in rec.photo.35mm sold me a defective
Vivitar 285HV flash and I needed to get it repaired : )

Jon failed to follow the sacred rule of Usenet.

Find your law citation before posting. Otherwise we KNOW you made it up.
