Gamma and Sharpen Corrections: Questions On ?

New at this.
Using Irfan View.

Can someone please explain to me exactly what the "Gamma" function is ?
What does it do ?
How does it do this? (what algorithm, etc. ?)

The same questions for "Sharpen" ?

How does Samma and Sharpen differ ?
