Why not 09xxx and 07xxx? They both cost way more than 0870.

No one forces people to call 0870 numbers, or any number for that matter. If
you don't want to spend n a minute on a phone call, don't make the phone
call.

And anyway, why should something as important to the economy as telecoms
policy be decided by taking polls of consumers?

That wasn't the point I was making. Now the only people that will be able to
provide F2E [and similar micropayment-dependant services] will be large
telcos. This will only reduce the choice available to consumers, and how
can that possibly be in their interest?

To be honest, if all number ranges that cost more than geo calls are
abolished, the services that depend on them will move offshore, which again
will only harm consumers, as they will be beyond the reach of the law in
this country.

No probs, I am on NTL BB, so I ditched my BT line ages ago. At the moment I
am using Sipdiscount all calls free, but it is charging me 18cents (Euro)
for 0870 calls.

I have the linksys router with the two voip ports, one is currently
sipdiscount, the other is sipgate (I think) never use.

If you asked around, you would find that a great many people are not
aware what an 0870 number costs to ring, but they think because these
numbers are used by some big companies, that the charge will be similar
to a local call. A couple of years ago, our local Trading Standards
dept. set up an 0870 number, and when one of their representatives was
on a local radio programme, answering listeners problems, I phoned in to
complain about their use of an 0870 number when a local number would be
much cheaper. He spluttered, and made some weak excuse for using the
number, but agreed that it was inappropriate, and it was soon dropped.

When I look up a number for someone, and I find the only option is a
0870 number, I tell them that it is likely to cost about 9p per minute,
and they are amazed at the high cost when compared to a geographic
number.

If one company can get by without the use of an 0870 then they all can
and in most cases many 0870 robbers have their geo number listed in
sayno even PC World .
For night time and weekend use I much prefer a geo number to even a
0800 I get free calls off peak to geo numbers with my mobile but have
to pay for 0800's .

And the longer you people with bulging bank accounts continue to dial
these obnoxious numbers the longer these money grabbing companies will
continue to have them . If only everyone would boycott them and
companies saw their sales figures slump they would get rid of their
0870's quick .

0870 numbers are charged at national rate (the same as ringing out of
your local area)

0845 are charged at local rate (the same as ringing a local number)

Its numbers like 0871 that are charged at higher rates (about 10ppm)

The only time you will pay a premium to ring 0870/0845 is when using a
mobile
