You do not get it, if someone wants to see if VOPIP is for them, then
they do not want to spend money out on hardware, because they may spend
out this money and then find out that VOIP is not for them.
There have to be an easy way to find out if VOIP is the right way to go,
that do not cost money.

Most ISPs will give you a free modem, the problem is they lock you into
a 12 month contract. what is needed is some way for people to try these
services and if they do not like it say within a month or tywo, they can
send back the equipment and nothing more is paid apart from the
subscription or calls.

Mat I think you are looking at this from the wrong angle two lines
from Vonage cost approx 63 p a day I have two Vonage lines, now
when you consider a loaf of bread cost anything from 80p to 1.10p
what does 63 p matter it doesn't . I know I can pick up either of my
two phones and make a geographical call to anywhere in the uk or the
whole of Ireland without having to worry about the cost . I must have
made calls worth at least 1.50 at BT rates this afternoon alone and
when you think you can have one line for just over 30 p a day well it
doesn't stand thinking about really especially with no line rental to
pay .
I am not pushing Vonage I would and have said more or less the same
thing about Voipfone the downside for me with Voiphone is that you
have to keep on topping up your account with Vonage one payment and
that is it for a month .

get this straight once and for all providing you have a broadband
connection there is no difference between a VOIP line and a BT line
except that you pay no line rental with VOIP .

So do you get that weird mixture of voices only when you interrogate the
answering service but callers hear clearly your announcement and nothing
else confusing?

And generally (ignoring ITU T.37, ITU T.38 and ITU V.150.1 which
asterisk doesn't support and neither do most VoIP providers) you can't
reliably use a fax machine or a modem over the line,
