Jumped ugly you say?
- It isn't intended - actually, I have quite a few leads from the
thread, and would like to thank everyone who had a go with an admittedly
difficult question.

If the song is "Popcorn", the original group name is (are you sitting down?)
Hot Butter. There was a remake in the early 90's which we got through the
record pool ( a house mix of sorts, if my Alzheimer's medication is doing
it's job. Regardless, I remember the only reason I kept the remake was
because one of the versions on the press was the original, full-length mix
and those were as hard to come by as... well, reasons to play the song were
then --and continue to be.

I do remember the song being a HUGE hit in Europe, during all nine of the
months I was there one year in the 70's. Let's face it; the song had a great
hook for disco, but the same tawdry allure doesn't fly on dancefloors (and
probably not for too many plays in living rooms) nowdays.

Funnily enough, there was a thread about Popcorn some time ago.

The track I am hunting isn't that I am afraid.
Thanks for your musing though.

Have you tried 'Morning' from 'Peer Gynt' by Edward Greig?

This seems to fit your description and it is certainly in the media a lot.

Xylophone music, could be something by Milt Jackson.

I'm probably wrong on this but I'll have a go... Is it Polka from the
Shostakovich Jazz suite #1?

It has a xylophone part that sounds similar to what you're describing.
If they played only that part you wouldn't know there were any other
instruments in it.

It might not be quite the same plonks as you're describing but it has a
part an octave or so above. Could be another part of the jazz suite.
