My little Yorkie snapped at me when I tried to move her with my foot
the other night. I didn't hit her but as soon as she had done it she
knew she had made a mistake and ran. She's only about 6 lbs so I can't
really back hand her but I have thumped an ear on occasion. She came
back when I called her and she was very humble. <g>

Yeah - I normally don't hit the doggies either. But when he bit my nose, it
was more reflex than anger. Maggie gets real bitchy when I try and move her
if she's sleeping. I usually grab both sides of her head and growl back <g>

That's what almost sent Brandy flying across the room, she snapped at
my foot and my first reaction was to kick, I caught myself before I did
though. Damned little yapping thing. Wouldn't do without her or her
mate Tex though.

For sure. My ex left years ago *and* took the dog. Fortunately, she saw the
error of her ways and returned the dog <g>! I added more later, and the last
one is a real problem child. She's chewed up everything in the house. Now
that she's about 6years old, the chewing seems to be over (for the last year
or so). I just bought a new leather recliner. If she chews on THAT I'll have
to reconsider my position on animal abuse!! (just kidding...)

Our Rotty/Lab mix mutt chewed the neck of my Takamine EAN10C acoustic
guitar in half. If it weren't for my wife, the dog's carcass would have
followed the splinters into the rubbish heap.

DAMN! I have holes in my carpet, holes in my furniture, holes in the
cabinets in the utility room, stinkin' dog even chewed the corners off the
brick hearth. But never anything 'personal' like that. I'd have been hard
pressed not to use what was left of the guitar on the dog myself. (Those
dogs better thank God for those anger management classes I took <g>)

Knowing the IP is one thing. Tracing it to a specfic computer is
something else. To trace network traffic to a specific piece of
hardware, you need the hardware (mac) address. The IP is volatile, while
the mac is tied to hardware. Routers normally strip hardware addresses,
using only IP for routing, so normally you can't identify network
hardware unless you're on the same LAN.

The bad news (for you) is that VPN (as far as I know) encapsulates
network traffic, so as far as routing goes you have the office LAN (no
router intercepting) extended through the VPN tunnel to your home. That
means you get IP from office DHCP, and your hardware address is visible
from the office network.

The other side of bad news (for the network admin) is that mac addresses
can be "spoofed". i.e. any computer can be set to use any mac address,
so the hardware could be what it looks like, or something else entirely.

The only thing that's clearly compromising here is the login info.
That's connected to a person, and quite hard to extract from a spurious
VPN connection. Hence, it's likely that the ID/passkey has been written
down/saved somehow, which is clearly bad practice.

Ok, so let's say hypothetically he knows the ip address and the mac
address of whatever person's logged in. It's midnight, he has no
access to the computer he's talking about as it belongs to a home user,
but by morning he's making his claims against this person. How does he
say that this person's computer has this mac address? Surely he'd need
to know what that was, even if he was going to try and spoof it. Is
there some other way he could get a hold of somebody's mac address,
like from an email or something?

The id being used is simply the person's name, with the most commonly
guessed password in history, if you get my drift. The tech has also
constantly resisted in the past implementing strong password security,
saying it's not necessary, and a very big job. I believe the only
reason he can have for that reluctance is that the encryption on those
passwords would be very hard for him to break, and therefore restrict
his own access for whatever it is he's up to.

Well, it seems to me that if someone has remote access, they should have the
strong passwords. Where I work, I assign passwords. Users have to let me
know if they need/want to change them. I keep an encrypted, password
protected list (off the network) in case my memory fails me <g>. The users
who don't have remote access - either VPN or email - have very simple
passwords.
