Hi.
I have Windows XP, and Outlook Express 6.
When I'm finished using Outlook Express, it asks me if I would like to
compact the files? If I answer "yes", it freezes, and I have to restart the
computer. Any ideas what is wrong?
Paul

Yes, an unfortunate chain of events: one, OE is crap; and two, Windows
is excessively vulnerable to applications bringing it down.

Most likely a corrupt .dbx file. Here are some good instructions from
Tom Koch.for getting files compacted when there are OE crashing
problems.

You may have too much stored. use the browse option when cleaning. Delete
and remove all headers and messages in each newsgroup you have . After
cleaning in this manner , then compact the newsgroup you just cleaned. Then
browse to another newsgroup and repeat. When you are finished, you can
click on a newsgroup to read it and fresh messages will be downloaded and
the old message will be gone. The more info you have in your folders the
slower your IE Outlook express.

Hi again,
A little more info.
When OE crashes the only thing I can do is to close down the computer. As I
do so the following messages appear:

ccApp ... not responding
NVIDIA Twin View Window ... not responding
Outlook Express FolderSync Windo ... not responding

This may help to diagnose my problem.
Thanks,
Paul.

Do you have Nvidia video card/graphics chip? I would not think Nvidia has
any anything to do with OE6. ( I am assuming, perhaps wrongly, that you
think Nvidia has something to do with OE6).

Like I said earlier try compacting one folder at a time, and delete some
newsgroup headers and messages before compacting. Delete all messages in
sent folder, deleted folder, and any other folder you may have created
holding messages you don't want and compact them individually. Then after
all that, compact Outlook Express for redundancy and thoroughness.

Hi,
Thanks! You were right, The file were too big, compacting them individually
first did the trick.
Many thanks for your help.
Paul.
