Windows XP SP 2
what are the signs & symptoms of the computer overheating? And what can be
done to prevent it (other than turning it off or an external fax) I' m
living with temps over 95-100 degrees for 8 days with no end in sight.
Thanks
lady

Depends upon the make of the computer and the operating system/tools
installed.
Usually, upon startup or in between your computer might beep and/or shutdown
without further notice. Or it just bluescreens/restarts while doing some
cpu-consuming task, like converting faxes.
If you are uncertain, take off one side of your computer case (preferrably
the side opposite to your keyboard and mouse connectors) and take a look
inside. With the computer powered on, you should see fans working and not
too much dust inside. Shutdown the computer, get a can of "compressed air"
and blow out the dust from in between the fan blades, while keeping the
nozzle of your vacuum nearby. If you have to do some "numbercrunching" like
ripping movies or songs, or playing heavy games, consider leaving the side
cover off until temperatures drop again.

And you might want to install Motherboard Monitor to monitor your CPU
and motherboard temperatures. It's free and easy to install. If you
know your CPU type and manufacturer you can find its shutdown
temperature at their web site and by monitoring you'll know when it's
approaching.

The symptoms will be that it will cut-out!
The first thing to check is has the internal fan failed?
Have you noted that your PC is not as "noisy" as it once
was?
More pertinant, what symptoms is your PC displaying?
And why are you associating it with over-heating?

Sorry, it's a Dell 3000. The only sympton that I've noticed is that it's
more noisy, internal fan is working. Since it's been so relentlessly hot
here, and the computer room is even hotter, I was trying to figure out what
to look for before a major problem occurs

And yes, I'm one of those computer ignorant newbies, so if I'm an irritant
to you, just pass on by, and thank you to all who replied

New "hot irons" will have a thermocouple or similar sensor attached to the
cpu fan, and incresase fanspeed to the maximum when it's getting hot
inside. Often enough, however, there is no case fan to pull the hot air out
of the case. So leave the side cover off while it's so hot, and - if
possible - consider airconditioning.

Like "hot stuff", or a hot/fast/marvelous motorbike or whatever else. Here I
would accept a dualcore/smp mainboard + cpu(s) with at least 3.2 Ghz.

Restarting, fried CPU and components.

And what can be done to prevent it

Case fans, upgraded CPU fan etc.

(other than turning it off or an external fax)

I' m living with temps over 95-100 degrees for 8 days with no end in sight.
