iPod Mini Question

Just got an iPod Mini.

The problem I am having is that if I leave it in the docking cradle it never
turns off (even when the computer is off) and the battery dies . It is
connected via FireWire cable to the cradle. Is there a setting so that It
will auto turn off in the cradle when it is not charging from the computer?
