Default PCI Communication Device

Hi Guys,

This is probably a very simple question to most of you, but here goes
anyway.
I've been using MSN Messenger for a long time and enjoying it as I have
close relatives on the other side of the earth (literally).
I was on it last yesterday evening with no prob's but today, I'm getting a
message saying the Windows Installer failed to install the program
associated with this file.
I haven't done anything to the machine except a reboot (although we have
been experiencing a lot of unusual storming in the area lately) I checked
the Device Manager and it is showing yellow question marks beside the PCI
communication devices.
I tried to reinstall the driver but it apparently can't find the driver on
my system.

Louise

Louise,

Have you thought about locating the driver disk for the device? Perhaps
it's on a CD separate from your computer... what a concept...

Win98
F8 boot up/Command prompt only and type
Scanreg/restore and press Enter and pick a cab file registry backup
from before the problem.

WinME/XP use the System Restore function.See window's Help on how to
use.

You imply plural for communication devices?
Click on "+" to open sub-menu,
locate exact device(s) marked with yellow questionmark(s).
Click on one so as to Hi-light it,
Now depending on which windoze - XP you RIGHT click
the device, - from menu select "Properties".
Hopefully the driver is not so corrupted that the identity and
data about the device is now oblique.
If you can get the data of manufacturer/EXACT model number,
And as you have online access (another PC?) -
logon to www.driverhq.com
It is free, but you have to register with valid email addy.
Locate the make/model of your device in site and download
updated drivers for device to a folder.
Again access device manager, hi-light device, select "update drivers".
And install drivers.
Complete for all devices marked with yellow "?".

Alternatively, having identified exact details of problematic
devices, and noted such details.....
You can first attempt the "found new hardware wizard".
In device manager, select to "Uninstall" the problem device(s)
Close all windows and REBOOT.
Upon restart, windows will detect the "uninstalled hardware",
and the Wizard dialog will appear.
Click to select option to allow Windoze to select the best drivers etc.
With this option all that windows searches is the driver folder,
It can sometimes be all that is required, so may just be successful,
but if the issue is because of corrupt drivers, all that will happen
is you will be back to point you are currently at. If so...........
If you had a "drivers cd" supplied with your PC,
Again, Uninstall problem devices as detailed above.
REBOOT PC, again the "found new hardware" wiz will appear.
This time opt to search for drivers, and direct ensuing dialog to
cd-rom. If all this fails, then logon and download new drivers from
www.driverhq.com

Eric is being very subdued these days isn't he?
