hi
I have just bought a second-hand dell computer and I have installed my
windows xp pro on it, my problem is I cannot get my display settings [colour
quality] to alter, they are stuck on 640 * 480 16 bit and there are no other
options available.when I look at monitor type it shows "default monitor" and
the properties tab is greyed out and not accessible.before I installed xp
the colour was fine.
this pc does not seem to have a agp slot on the motherboard does this mean I
cannot install a video card of any kind or is there some other sort I could
use.
I would be grateful for any advice on these problems

If you install the correct drivers for the video you are using you'll
have more choices for resolution and color depth. And if there's no AGP
slot available, you can use a PCI video card and install in any
available PCI slot.

Could be any number of things but it may be as simple as just updating
the display drivers. Check your system informaton
(Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools) or (Control
Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager) to see what you could possibly
have on your system and go from there. Since you don't have an AGP
slot you could have a pci video card. Otherwise you have onboard
video (built into the motherboard).

If you have an open pci slot you can install a new pci videocard
there. You'll likely have to disable onboard video before you install
the new card so check the Dell website for proper instructions.

For that matter, check the Dell website first for specifics on your
particular model and possibly any FAQs related to your particular
problem.

Go to dell site and check for driver updates for the specific sys,
specifically graphics/mobo drivers

Look on the back of the Dell for the service tag number. Go to the Dell
website, plug that number in and you should see downloads for audio and
10/100 ethernet.
