'Echoing' sound problem

Until about a week ago my P4 2.6 GHz Medion 8008 machine played sound fine.
Now every file played and every game with sound plays with an echo on it.
I'm running XP Home OS. What can be the problem and how do I investigate and
ultimately fix it?

Thanks

Yu did not mention any details about the type of sound card, mother board,
and basic specs for your machine. Therefore details are impossible to post
from someone who would be familiar with the setup options for your sound
card.

Basically most sound card software's today have some special effects
available in their set-ups. Someone, or some software that was used, turned
this feature on. Or, another software is being loaded to do the echo effect.
Go to the setup section for your sound card. Look under effects, or the
equivalent to that. In there you should be able to find a setup menu, or set
of options however they are presented. In there, you should be able to find
the procedure to remove the echo effect. If you are having problems to find
this, while in their setup program, try to press the F1 key for help. Most
high quality programs will come up with a help menu. You can do a search for
the word echo, and this should give you a good chance to find out more.

If you have a name brand sound card, your easiest solution is to call their
tech support. Most sites for products will have an FAQ section for many of
their common problems.

What sound-card / sound chip-set is it?

If it's an Audigy / Audigy 2 have a look at...

Start

Control Panel

AudioHQ

EAX Control Panel

Under Audio Effects check to see if one of the Special FX has been selected,
e.g. reverb, and, if so, click the "All Effects Off" button and click Close

Have you got an effects filter on the sound card? Something like
"Large Hall, Cathedral" or something. That was the cause of mine.

ATI Radeon 9600TX
128MB DDR SDRAM 540 MHz - full hardware support for DirectX9

Thanks to all - I took advice and found sound effects set-up was 'Cave'! I

That's your video card, not your sound card.

Start

Run

DXDIAG

On the Sound tab what does it say for the Device name?
