Default SNMP service not working

I am trying out a few bandwidth meters for a network (imminent NTL caps mean
I have to be careful with bandwidth), and am trying to use the SNMP service
on a WinXP Home desktop PC. Every time I try to start the service it starts,
then instantly a popup says "this service has started and then stopped" and
something about other services that stop when they are not needed. It works
OK on my other PC's and laptop (XP Home and Pro), the only dependencies for
this service is EventLog which is running and a check of it only says that
"SNMP service has stopped" as if I requested it to, no error.

I've also checked the SNMP port to make sure it's not in use by another app,
and it isn't.

Anyone else come up against this?

Follow the road until you get to the next right then turn left, and on
Monday you should be there.

I'll give it a go, but to be honest I'm not convinced. I'll let you know on
Monday how I get on.
