I have a USB modem on XP SP2 for adsl.
Can I use it to dial out using eg Outlook Contacts?
When I try, Outlook goes to my internal modem which is not connected to the
phone-line. If I uninstall the modem then I get nothing.

click tools-accounts
then click the mail tab then select a mail account
click properties.
click connection tab
put a tick in the box "always connect to this account using"
change the connection to your external modem, click ok.

not to sure if this one works as i cant try it on my machine
click tools- options
click the connection tab
under internet connection settings, click change.
click the dialup for the external modem then click set as default.
click ok
then ok again.

Engage brain before replying in future! You are talking complete and utter
bullshit. If you don't know anything about the way a broadband 'modem' works
(and you obviously don't) then don't bother replying as your 'advice' only
serves to mislead and offer false hope. You can't dial out using a broadband
'modem' (quotes deiberate because it's not a modem at all - modem is a
contraction of modulation-demodulation and can only be applied to a device
capable of carrying data signals via a standard phone line - yes, I know
it's a crap description) because a broadband modem is nothing more than an
external network connection to a WAN (wide area network) and a network card
has no telephony capabilities, and neither does an ADSL 'modem'. He must
connect his internal analogue modem to a splitter attached to his phone
line. That is the only way,

Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections tab
If you have anything in the window for Dial-up and Virtual private
Network settings, remove it, all other options will grey out.

You may need to double check your LAN settings, but I doubt it as only
one network program is affected.

Actually you are only half right.

No.

If you want dial capabilities connect your dialup modem to the
phoneline. The adsl can't do that.

See Perspi's.

Fine, that's done and it works with an application called 'Phonedeck'. It
still does not dial out with MSOutlook, but I'm darned if I can work out
why (
